Cheap Hotel Accomodations in London

1. What did you do in 2006 that you’d never done before?
Agh it’s good that I started this early last week, LOL. I finally found my answer to this question while babbling to the parents early this evening.

I got so drunk I forgot what happened and I woke up on a sicky pillow. In a room. On the floor. In the clothes I passed out in. At a wedding. I think that definitely has to be the answer to this question this year, lol. And I will never do that again. Especially not this year, at my brother’s wedding :-P

Anyway, I’ll still retain my other answers to this question for posterity … I went to a civil ceremony, when my cousin Alice got married. Never done it before, but now of course it’s all the rage, my brother’s doing the same next May. Also, I sat next to a mother and kicking child on a bus journey from York to London. Hope I don’t ever have to repeat that.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I stayed off beer for about a week, lol. Maybe I’ll make it to a month this year. And I didn’t make much headway on my album at all, lol, though I did write new songs to complicate the matter even more, and I made a great piece of cover art. But seriously, here are my resolutions for this year

  1. No more beer. I’m not cutting out alcohol, and I may well end up f**king my liver just as much as I have in the past. But no more beer. That’s where I’m starting. One rule. No more beer. Typically, the beer I’ve been having tonight has so far gone down beautifully as opposed to most of the stuff I’ve drunk in the past month that has given me awful stomach acid. But I stand by my decision. Only one left in the fridge at the time of writing!! And by the time of posting I’m guessing I’ll be onto the champagne.
  2. This one may actually help number one, but it is also the one resolution of which I’m thinking, “why the hell am I even making this one, ‘cos it’s just impossible”. And it is, no more shopping where I work. It’s kind of stupid, since I get a really good discount and everything, but I tell myself that this is what they want me to think. I’m 100% sure that if I stopped shopping there my life would be a lot better and I’d feel a lot less evil, heck, I’d be a lot less evil if I put my ass on a bus and went shopping someplace smaller selling local produce etc. I just don’t know if I can completely do without it. We’ll see.
  3. One new movie a day (ie. new to me). I have a great line-up for January and the Oscars are coming etc so I have a good feeling I can keep this up till March at least.
  4. Old movies. Ones that are new to me and ones I’ve seen before, doesn’t matter, I’m gonna attempt to drown myself in black and white and technicolor old-fashioned cinema this year.
  5. 100 albums, 100 movies. ie. From the year 2007. I’ve worked this out and there’s no reason I can’t do it. I can easily accomodate 2 new albums a week on my iPod playlist at work, and if I watch one brand new movie a week and pick up on the rest as they come out on DVD towards the end of the year, I can certainly do that too.
  6. MY STUFF. Shouldn’t really be so late in the list I guess, this one, lol. In addition to all that above, I know that it’s still possible for me to spare 2 hours a day for my music, and I fully intend to do this. No excuses. If I only get out of bed an hour early and not dither around on the internet in the morning, I can find those two hours. And in two hours I can do a lot.
  7. Learn to draw. Well, that’s kinda broad, lol. I have two blank drawing pads my sister found that I gave to her years ago that I bought years before that, and I have a ton of drawing tutorials I found somewhere. I’m gonna work through them. I’m just gonna fill those pads. I’m just gonna see what happens.
  8. (at least start to) Learn a new language. I’ve got a bunch of materials around, including various good looking podcasts on Japanese, Polish and Swedish. Again, I’m just gonna screw around and see what happens.

I think that should be enough to keep be going :-P

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope.

5. What countries did you visit?
I visited websites all around the world!

6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
More time.

7. What dates from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
September 2nd, my cousin’s wedding; September 29th/30th, Avenue Q and Wicked.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Umm … stayed off the cigarettes? Apparently that’s commendable so I’ll take anything I can get, lol. I actually realised while looking at last year’s meme, this is in fact my first full year without them, ‘cos evidentally I was still in the process of finishing a pack at the beginning of last year and didn’t want to waste them, lol. So, err, yay me, I actually thought I’d been off them longer than that. Let me echo what I wrote last year – don’t let the stupid ads and campaigns and shit bully you into believing that quitting is actually difficult. Just know it is the worst semi-acceptable thing you can put in your body and as soon as you stop you will start feeling better.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Yeh … continuing putting far too much of the second worst semi-acceptable thing into my body, lol – alcohol. Can’t win. Also, not talking to people enough, which is quite normal for me I guess, but in this case, I mean particularly even online. Also, though I’m sure she’ll disagree with me, not talking to Sarah enough.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I was sick enough a couple of times to be off work ;-) But nah nothing serious.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Probably all the London stuff. The Belle and Sebastian book I bought on a whim back in August is proving worth it though, even though I’m only a couple of chapters in.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Mine? Okay seriously, just anybody who didn’t let themselves be led or brainwashed by the media and popular opinion and sociological trends and clichés, even the most stupid stuff that doesn’t even seem to matter, if you did a single thing that people at large frowned upon, then I congratulate you. And if you were scared about doing that thing too, then you deserve an award on top of that.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
People who think they get it and think they’re fixing their lives and improving when really they’re just moving from one brainwashing scheme to another. People who can’t remember they used to be kids. People who have stopped learning. People who can’t accept that human beings are animals. People who are just plain f**king miserable about every single thing that happens. Misery’s great, folks, but be a little selective and realise that positivity is just as wonderful if not moreso. Till then, forgive me if I seem a little too positive sometimes about things that probably don’t deserve it … I’m just creating balance. Oh yeh, and people who are literally nothing beyond their gender, race, sexuality and the things they wear and own. You just know I could go on and on, but I’ll stop right there.

14. Where did most of your money go?
I’d say alcohol as usual but that’s obvious. The most I spent for one purpose was on London.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Seeing Idina Menzel in Wicked. And, as I realised a few hours ago, this very night – the New Year really is the most exciting thing for me :)

16. What song will always remind you of 2006?
“Defying Gravity” from Wicked, “Funny Little Frog” by Belle and Sebastian. “I’ll Never Have That Chance” from Elton John’s “Lestat”.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? a smidgin happier
b) thinner or fatter? a smidgin fatter
c) richer or poorer? a smidgin richer

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Music.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Drinking.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
As usual at home.

21. Did you fall in love in 2006?
Nope I stayed in love :) I love you Sarah.

22. How many one-night stands?
None.

23. What was your favorite TV program?
I made a separate post for this … but it was “Jam and Jerusalem”.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Not really. Hate is a transient thing to me – I can hate people I generally love for one particular stupid thing they do but I get over it soon enough … and most people I hate “all the time” aren’t worth the effort of even thinking about hating, so I technically don’t hate them, since I’m not even active about it.

25. What was the best book you read?
Poppy Z. Brite’s “Soul Kitchen”, Joe Queenan’s “Queenan Country”, Bret Easton Ellis’ “Lunar Park”

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Belle and Sebastian – I can’t believe that was only this year :-o Imogen Heap and Frou Frou, too. Bizarre.

27. What did you want and get?
Giant hard drive, great seats at Wicked and Avenue Q, new camera, new iPod. The Stanley Kubrick Archives book and Paris Out of Hand.

28. What did you want and not get?
New phone, new computer.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?
Little Children, SherryBaby, and Silent Hill– the rest here

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Went out, and I was 6.

31.What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being with Sarah.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
Last year it was sleepover, lol – this year, kinda almost the reverse. I do wear ‘outdoors’ clothes … but they tend to come to bed on me sometimes, lol.

33. What kept you sane?
Podcasts and radio on my iPod at work – starting with The Ricky Gervais Show, adding Adam and Joe, Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour, Elaine Paige on Sunday, The Now Show, and I keep finding more. I just realised that This American Life podcast. That’ll be next year’s saviour, I’m sure.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Brace yourselves, I’ve two grown-ups! And they would be Julie Atherton, who I saw as Kate Monster in Avenue Q in September, and Briony Price, who should’ve at least made it to the heats of “How do you Solve a Problem Like Maria?” Just the sweetest person I have ever seen on TV, as this clip should attest. And, of course, my regular cuties – Dakota, Courtney, Miranda, and also this year, Jodelle Ferland of Silent Hill, Tideland and the “Dead Like Me” pilot :)

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
To be honest? All the stuff Mrs. Pritchard dealt with, lol.

36. Who did you miss?
A whole lot of people :(

37. Who was the best new person you met?
Eek! I almost totally forgot that I actually have met new people this year, at Alice’s wedding. So I guess it’s gotta be Jamie, her husband, and all his friends. I was drunk, as I’ve already written about, but still, not one of them looked at me, as most people do, like I had an ass for a face or something, so yes, they were about as “best” as it gets here :) However, before I thought of them, I was about to say, weirdly, it has to be a girl called Laura on MySpace, lol, even though it was just a comment I made on her blog about her mentioning Michael McIntyre and her acknowledging my comment and saying something nice about my music, that was the most meaningful communication I’ve had with a stranger all year, lol.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006
Umm … “Everything in life is only for now” ? (had to work Avenue Q in here somewhere, lol).

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year
Okay do you want the short version or the long version? I’ve been thinking about my answer to this one for a few weeks now and there’s only one that does it, and I’m gonna post the whole thing (minus Glinda’s part). But first, a nice short one I remembered just last night which almost does it:

“A boy was staring at the sky, his telescope and eagle-eye were fixed on a distance.” – I can’t find the actual lyrics anywhere, it could be eager eyes or other variations, but I like how I hear it, from Tim Finn’s “Astounding Moon”.

Okay and this is the long version, this song for better or worse is me this year. “Wicked” is just …. Wicked. Every time I listen to it it gets better, and as I said to Sarah earlier, like Pringles, once I start listening, I can’t stop.

“Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap

It’s time to try
Defying gravity
I think I’ll try
Defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down…

I’m through accepting limits
‘Cuz someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But ‘till I try, I’ll never know
Too long I’ve been afraid of
Losing love – I guess I’ve lost
Well, if that’s love
It comes at much too high a cost

I’d sooner buy
Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I’m defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down…

So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky
As someone told me lately – “Ev’ryone deserves the chance to fly”
And if I’m flying solo
At least I’m flying free
To those who’d ground me
Take a message back from me –
Tell them how I
Am defying gravity!
I’m flying high
Defying gravity!
And soon I’ll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!”
